Real Bridge Building! 

Team building is so often about building metaphorical bridges between team members. In this challenging and involving activity, however, there is nothing metaphorical about the bridges that teams have to build!

A major construction company has won a government contract to build all bridge building in the UK for the next 3 years. This company is now looking for a partner to handle all the footbridges within the contract. Whoever wins the partnership will be guaranteed significant business for the next 3 years - and hopefully beyond.

Each team is expected to demonstrate its capability across a variety of areas. At the heart of the bidding process is the requirement to design and build a 1:100 scale model of a prototype bridge using only the materials supplied to the best cost possible.

Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, this is one activity that can take advantage of good weather but not be spoiled by bad.

Will Your Team Succeed? 

Can the teams ask the right questions of their prospective partner to help them design a solution that really meets the requirement? Can they adapt their design process as new information becomes available? Can they cope keep the cost down yet still meet the need?  Teams need:

  • To design, build, test and demonstrate their solution to the customer's problem.

Bridge tests each team's creativity, practicality, adaptability, commercial acumen and its ability to handle multiple tasks. All types of skill are required, so no one will sit out on the sidelines.

As the activity draws near to the end, everyone comes together for the grand finale. Each team gives a sales pitch to the major construction company and demonstrates the effectiveness, robustness and safety of its prototype.

Why did the chicken cross the road? It doesn't matter so long as it uses our bridge to do it!
