About Us

Our clients think we're different.   And so do we. Formed in 1992, we're a family-owned and family-run business that cares about quality and client satisfaction.  Our activities are developed by us, run by us and uniquely capable of mixing participant enjoyment with team, departmental and organisational improvement.

Our Approach

When we started, we were a learning and development company.  Our approach from the outset was that our participants need to be awake if they are to gain any benefit. So we created a number of activity resources to help us make our sessions come alive.

The Sandstone Team

Our clients liked them so much that they started to ask us to use them for stand-alone events such as corporate away days, conferences and other team building sessions. And when enough of them did that, we thought we would see if other organisations were interested as well.

To say that we were delighted with the response is a massive understatement. Within a few short months, Team Building became our primary business.

Not Just Team Bonding

Team building – not simply team bonding. There will always be a place for spending money on your people just for fun. We offer the traditional options, if you want them. Or you could just take them to the pub, the race track, a kart circuit etc. That's bonding.

If you want to increase their effectiveness long term, you need the session to have genuine parallels with what they do in the workplace as well as being fun. To be able to uncover better ways of working. That is where we come in.

Fun and Challenging

Our simulations mix enjoyment and challenge in equal measure. Tackling our challenges requires the same kind of skill sets and team approaches that your people need at work. So individual and team learning is relevant and effective.

Sometimes we are asked to run sessions purely for fun. More commonly, clients are looking to also make a real difference back in the real world.

Our client list is impressive. From small organisations to household names. We work in the public, private and charity sectors. We work nationally and internationally.

We have partners and associates in Europe and North America delivering our unique team building sessions to our exacting standards.

Why choose us?

In a nutshell our niche market is learning-capable, scaleable, fully inclusive team building.  What this means is that:

  • Our options, as well as being enjoyable, are designed to offer real team improvement
  • We can handle any group size from 3 to 3,000 people with the same, fantastic portfolio of activities
  • We don’t have people standing on the sidelines – each activity has something for everyone to enjoy and get stuck into

In a bit more detail…

We could refer you to our extensive list of clients.  We could tell you about our passionate and committed team of professionals.  We could show you some photos of our participants thoroughly enjoying themselves (there are plenty of these in the brochures that you can request).  We could even impress you with our brilliant range of unique activities.

But perhaps the best way of answering the question is to show how our approach fits in with academic research.  We recently came across a fascinating paper by Dr Gene Benter (who has no relationship with us whatsoever) on what makes for effective team building sessions.  At the end of the document he makes three main conclusions.  We’re delighted to say that our activities comply with all three of them.  We think that the last of them is the most revealing.  He writes:

"Team building activities such as mountain climbing, cooking contest, and fire walks are ineffective exercises to develop team work because what is at stake in these activities is survival and not camaraderie. Team building should not induce pain or physical suffering simply because they can strengthen the commitment of each member of the team … Giving rigorous and difficult exercises for team building only discourages participants to commit themselves … It is good to remember that people join the workforce to earn a living and not to subject themselves to pain and hardships."

We couldn’t agree more.  That’s why we call our activities "all inclusive".  There’s something for everyone and nothing is compulsory. We send everyone away glad they participated as well as sending teams away ready to be better the next day onwards.
